Cattle dogs are VERY active. They want, and need, a job. If you expect them to entertain themselves, you'll probably regret that idea. We're just sayin', but you don't always have to learn everything the hard way.
They compete in conformation, herding, agility, obedience, etc.
They are used daily in non-ribbon-granting activities like ranch and farm work, therapy dog work, frisbee catching, bringing in the newspaper, picking up stuff you don't feel like bending over to pick up, bothering the cat. The possibilities are endless.

 
Many internet sites will tell you this is a "quiet" breed, a quiet worker. That depends on the dog.
